Great news for residents of South Pimlico! The Post Office have overturned their decision to close the Crown Post Office on Lupus Street following a strong community campaign led by Mark alongside Westminster City Council and local activists.
Over the past 18 months or so we have held regular discussions with Post Office Management and the local Conservative team organised a petition against the proposed closure which over a thousand residents signed. Mark then laid the petition before Parliament provoking an official government response and significant local publicity. The united campaign proved so successful the Lupus Street branch is now set to be invested in by the Post Office underlining their renewed commitment to South Pimlico.
Mark said: “This is excellent news. For about a year and a half the local Pimlico community have been working hard to keep this very busy Post Office branch open as it provides a vital service to many local people. In April 2013 I wrote to Paula Vennells, Chief Executive of Post Office Ltd, informing her that I found the proposal completely unacceptable. I am pleased that Post Office were prepared to listen to local people and have agreed to keep the Lupus Street Post Office open. This is a great victory for the whole community but if we are to keep it open I encourage local residents to take advantage of the broad range of services the branch offers.”
NOTE FOR EDITORS:
- Post Office Ltd announced in April 2013 that they were considering closing the Crown Post Office in Lupus Street, South Pimlico as part of their business modernisation programme.
- The nearest alternative Post Office branches are located on Vauxhall Bridge Road (0.4 miles) and Eccleston Street (0.7 miles). Distances in urban areas are far more pronounced and the Lupus Street branch serves several large housing estates where there are a significant number of elderly and at risk residents with mobility issues.
