Join us on a guided tour of the national Conservative Party Archive in Oxford. Followed by lunch and a tour of the Bodleian's historic libraries.

The national Conservative Party Archive preserves materials, documents and artifacts from the parliamentary party, voluntary party activists and CCHQ. This amazing collection dates back to 1867 and includes both manuscript, publicity and photographic history. There is plenty of fascinating information on key Conservative personalities over the years. We will receive a guided tour of this collection of treasures from a party archivist. The group will be able to handle documents and suggest in advance, items they would specifically like to view.

This will be followed by a three-course lunch at one of Oxford's premier restaurants. In the afternoon after lunch, we will visit the iconic Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library, where many scenes from the Harry Potter films and numerous period drama's were shot. The visit is now also expanded to cover the legendary Convocation House and Chancellor’s Court.

In the event this visit is over-subscribed, priority will be given to those who have not attended before.

The Bodleian Library
University of Oxford
The Bodleian Library.

The Bodleian Library dates back to 1488, with the library, as it stands today, opening in 1602 by Sir Thomas Bodley. Generations of famous scholars have been educated in its reading rooms through the ages. Amongst them, monarchs, Nobel Prize winners, British Prime Ministers and writers including Oscar Wilde, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien have studied here.

Delve into the drama of the university and stories of student high jinks. Starting in the Divinity School and ending in the exquisite Duke Humfrey’s Library, hear how Oxford University maintained order in the 17th-century and also housed King Charles I’s parliament whilst the King was resident in Oxford during the English Civil War (1642–1651).

After the Archive, you will see the Divinity School, Convocation House, Chancellor’s Court, and Duke Humfrey’s Library on throughout the day.

Conservative Party Archive.

Conservative Heritage has been established to support the critical preservation work of the Conservative Party Archive. The Archive is designated by the Board of the Conservative Party as the appropriate place for the deposit of records created by the Conservative Party at the regional, national, and European level.

Established in 1978, the Archive collects and preserves the historical records of the Party dating from 1867 to the present day and facilitates research and study into all aspects of the Party’s history.

The records in the Archive represent all three areas of the Party organisation: the parliamentary Party, the voluntary wing of Party activists, and the professional Party (namely the records of Conservative Central Office/Conservative Campaign Headquarters). Records are collected in all formats: not just paper, but also photographs, objects, audio-visual media, and, increasingly, digital records.

Find out more about the Party Archive on their website.
